Frequently Asked Questions

What filler is right for me?
There are several “families” of hyaluronic acid fillers, including Juvederm (UltraXC, Volbella and Voluma), and Restylane (Refyne, Defyne, Lyft, Restylane-L and Restylane Silk), to name a few. The choice of filler used in facial rejuvenation depends on the area being treated, the age of the patient, and the desired duration of the result. Dr. Magill has experience with a vast array of fillers and chooses your treatment to obtain the best result.
What are the different fillers and how are they different?
Most of the fillers used today are hyaluronic acid based and differ based on their water uptake and firmness. If a filler is hydrophilic and viscous, it is best used in deeper volume therapies. If a filler is easily malleable and mobile, it is best used close to the skin or to treat fine lines. Dr. Magill chooses a facial filler based on the age of the patient, the location of the treatment, and the desired duration of the result. Juvederm and Restylane are both filler brands that each offer a wide array of fillers with unique technologies and abilities.
Is Sculptra a filler? What does it do?
Sculptra is not a filler, but is made of poly-L-lactic acid and acts to stimulate the body’s own collagen after a treatment. Sculptra excels in treating the temples and the midface to produce natural looking and long lasting facial volume therapy. Dr. Magill has been using Sculptra for over a decade and highly encourages anyone seeking Sculptra therapy to seek out an experienced physician.
What does Botox treat? How long does it last?
Botox relaxes the dynamic contraction of muscle and help to smooth lines that form when a muscle moves or contracts. Botox typically lasts for a range of 3 to 6 months. Botox is not a filler and does not change facial volume. It helps to smooth areas that hold tension, including the glabella (area between the eyebrows), crow’s feet, and forehead.
When will I need a facelift or neck lift?
It is most common for women and men to seek out facelift and neck lift surgery in their fifties and sixties. Genetic factors often predict when facial skin and neck skin lose their elasticity and would benefit greatly from surgical rejuvenation. Dr. Magill is board certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
What is the recovery time after a facelift or neck lift surgery?
Three weeks is recommended from the time of a facelift or neck lift surgery to a social event. Initial healing is done at one week and bruising and swelling linger for several weeks after the procure.
How do I know if I have skin cancer?
Skin cancers typically appear as spots on the face that may grow, cause pain, bleed, and do not go away on their own. Skin cancers may be pale and firm, or may be flat or pigmented. It is essential to see your dermatologist or primary care provider if you are concerned about a facial skin cancer. Dr. Magill provides expert care for facial skin cancer treatment and surgical removal.
How is a facial skin cancer removed?
Facial skin cancers are typically diagnosed with a biopsy and will often need a second procedure to remove the entire skin cancer. When facial skin cancers are removed, the borders of the skin cancer or “margins” are checked to make sure no skin cancer has been left behind. Dr. Magill typically removes facial skin cancers under a brief local or general anesthetic in the operating room with analysis of the margins before the wound is closed or reconstructed. Melanoma treatment may involve removal of a regional lymph node and empiric wide margins around the skin cancer at the time of the surgery.
What is skin resurfacing? How does the CO2 laser work?
Laser skin resurfacing offers a precise and state-of-the-art technique to improve skin texture, skin firmness, and to treat fine lines. The CO2 laser is a wavelength taken up by water and can target cells to stimulate the new collagen desposition. The CO2 laser treatment can be done in the office with topical and local anesthetic. After CO2 laser treatment, patients will typically needs several days typically need of downtime depending on the depth and extent of the therapy. Dr. Magill has been using the CO2 laser for skin surfacing for over a decade and recommends consulting with an experienced physician for any resurfacing treatments.
